Patrick Meyrueis: The 2023 SPIE President’s Award

Patrick Meyrueis has been involved in holography and diffractive-optics research for more than four decades. He began his career as an engineer at the French Department of Industry, then became an associate professor at what is now the University of Strasbourg. In 1981, he founded the university’s Photonics Group, leading it until 1987, when he founded the Photonics System Laboratory — now ICube Laboratory — one of the most advanced labs in the field of planar digital optics. Meyrueis is now an associate and the chief technical officer of Segton Advanced Technology, founded in 2013. An SPIE Fellow since 2008, Meyrueis has authored numerous publications and books, and, over his academic career, has overseen more than 100 student theses. In 2018, he received special recognition from SPIE for his long-term support and involvement with SPIE Photonics Europe.

“Patrick Meyrueis, an emeritus professor at the University of Strasbourg, has been a key enabler in installing SPIE’s activities throughout Europe,” notes 2023 SPIE President Bernard Kress. “His involvement ranges from the first holography conference in Strasbourg in 1978, to the more recent SPIE Photonics Europe conference series — also in Strasbourg — starting in 2004. His many activities include initiating the first Photonics Innovation Village concept, a popular event that is still a Photonics Europe feature today. In addition, his leadership role led him to work closely with local governments and national government agencies, both in France and Germany, to help budget and build optics and photonics centers of excellence. Altogether, Patrick has been a critical and consistent figure in nurturing regional initiatives in optics and photonics.”
